In February 2012, Buffalo Mayor Byron Brown challenged the local development community to submit ideas to revitalize the Webster Block, an underutilized city block adjacent to First Niagara Center, home of the Buffalo Sabres. The team of Mortenson Construction, Populous, and ICON Venue Group submitted the winning plan for a multi-use facility designed to bring the Buffalo Entertainment District to life. Together the team worked diligently to develop the design, confirm the project budget, and establish the overall construction schedule before breaking ground in April 2013. As Construction Manager, Mortenson led the overall construction efforts including: community outreach, procurement, safety compliance, quality management, Virtual Design & Construction, scheduling, site logistics, and general contracting. HARBORCENTER offers patrons a two-rink community hockey center set atop a 750-car parking ramp; (716), a destination restaurant; retail shops; and a 205-key Marriott Hotel. The ice rinks, parking structure, and (716) celebrated with a grand opening in the Fall of 2014 and the hotel opened in the Summer of 2015.
